25 years of austin. one mission: real japanese food, fast.
About ZEN Japanese Food Fast
Since opening in Austin in 1999, ZEN Japanese Food Fast has been built around one simple vision: make Japanese-inspired food healthy, approachable, affordable, and genuinely exciting for everyday life.
At a time when fast casual dining often meant sacrificing freshness or quality, ZEN set out to do things differently. Inspired by the balance, simplicity, and ingredient-driven philosophy of Japanese cuisine, ZEN introduced Austin to a concept centered on wellness, flavor, and community long before “healthy fast casual” became a trend.
For more than 25 years, ZEN has remained proudly Austin-grown — evolving alongside the city while staying true to the values that started it all: fresh ingredients, thoughtful sourcing, and food that makes people feel good.
Chef Jay Huang & The ZEN Philosophy
At the heart of ZEN’s culinary direction is Chef Jay Huang, whose philosophy blends traditional Japanese inspiration with Texas creativity and local ingredients.
Chef Jay has twice been recognized as a finalist in the prestigious Ora King Salmon competition, an honor that celebrates chefs pushing the boundaries of modern cuisine while respecting craftsmanship and ingredient integrity.
That same philosophy guides every dish at ZEN. From sushi and rice bowls to dumplings, salads, wagyu burgers, and Japanese crepes, the focus has always been on balance — bold flavor without heaviness, comfort without compromise, and meals designed to fit into a healthy lifestyle.
A Partnership Rooted in Texas
One of ZEN’s most important partnerships is with Peeler Farms, a Texas ranch known for raising premium wagyu cattle with exceptional care and sustainability standards.
For ZEN, sourcing local wagyu isn’t just about quality — it’s about supporting Texas producers who share the same commitment to integrity, wellness, and responsible food practices.
That partnership allows guests to experience high-quality wagyu in an approachable way, whether through signature bowls, burgers, or specials from Luck’s Wagyu Burger Shoppe.
Bringing Japanese Crepes to Austin
Long before Japanese crepes became a national trend, ZEN was introducing Austinites to the playful street-food culture of Harajuku, Tokyo.
Originally popularized in the vibrant neighborhoods of Tokyo, Japanese crepes are known for their delicate texture, artistic presentation, and endless sweet-and-savory possibilities. ZEN helped bring that experience to Austin by combining authentic inspiration with local creativity and fresh ingredients.
Today, ZEN’s crepes remain one of the restaurant’s most beloved offerings — a reflection of the brand’s commitment to fun, innovation, and cultural connection.
More Than a Restaurant
From the beginning, ZEN’s mission has extended beyond serving great food.
The restaurant has long supported ideas around health, wellness, sustainability, and community connection. Whether through thoughtful sourcing, vegetarian and gluten-free options, partnerships with local farms, or simply creating a welcoming gathering place, ZEN believes food should positively impact both people and community.
Over the past 25 years, generations of Austinites have made ZEN part of their routines — from quick lunches and late-night crepes to family dinners, catering events, and weekend traditions.
As Austin continues to grow, ZEN remains committed to the same goal it started with in 1999: bringing people together through fresh, flavorful Japanese-inspired food that feels good to eat.
